A New Year, A New Start

I'm also changing the voice of the blog from a news-like third person to a more personal first person perspective. I hope people will find it a little more engaging. I certainly don't want to pretend to have all the answers and I have a tremendous amount to learn about our school system. And so I'd like this blog will serve as a document of my journey where I can share my ideas and what I have learned with my neighbors.

As I pointed out in my last article, I'm finished expending a lot of energy on City Councilor David Flaherty. I have to mention, however, that I happened into Flaherty yesterday at the Tavern in Westfield. We had a good and civil 30 minute conversation. Our discussion was basically a rehash of everything we've already debated about in various online forums. We certainly didn't change each other's minds but we politely agreed to disagree. I even bought him lunch to make up for all the grief I've given him over the past few years. And you thought peace in the Middle East was impossible?

Perhaps it was the motivating words of Michael Pritchard that inspired my olive branch offering to Flaherty. Pritchard was the keynote speaker at the Tuesday's opening day convocation for teachers at Westfield High. Using his special comedic talents, Pritchard pulled off the difficult feat of preaching without being preachy. Anybody who didn't come away from his performance without feeling more inspired to go out there and make a difference in the community and in the lives of our children and our neighbor's children must have a heart carved from the very finest stone. Kudos to Dr. Scallion for selecting such a great speaker. I uploaded some selected photos of Michael Pritchard during his masterful performance. His website is here. And he highly recommended that I watch a movie called "The Happy Movie" which you can rent online here. I have not seen it yet.

Finally, a shameless plug. For those who don't know yet, I have decided to throw my hat into the ring for an at-large city council seat. I hope you'll check out my site at http://dondleyforcitycouncil.com and join me on http://Facebook.com/DondleyForCC. I would greatly appreciate your vote on November 5th. I am making support for our schools one of my top priorities, of course.

With that, here's to having a wonderful and productive school year!
